Christmas Time again

Pretty 1950s dress from Oasis
There seems to be a lot of lovely dresses out at the moment with a vintage feel.  Oasis in particular is doing some lovely ones inspired by the 1920s through to the 1950s.  Here are a couple of my favourites. It just goes to show that there is a lot of fashion out there that is affordable and has a vintage feel.  These would all go really nicely with one of our fascinators with, or without a veiling to finish the look.

Another Oasis dress, comes in black too...

Other beautiful dresses can be found on 20th century Foxy, sometimes it’s bit hit and miss whether your size will be in stock but they are beautiful dresses.  If you want something less dressy then why not have your own dress made?  ‘Get Cutie’ in Brighton have very girly patterns and you pick the print.  Very exciting and you don’t have to touch a sewing machine.  Saying that if you did want to make your own dress to be truly unique, you’ll be able to find lots of lovely vintage patterns online. Be prepared to buy a lot of material though as these floor length beauties will cost you but all that hard work and cost is worth it sometimes.

If you are going for Hollywood glamour this Christmas party season then obviously I would highly recommend it.  Not only do you feel outrageous glamorous, you will feel great.   I’d recommend this book Vintage Hairstyling: Retro Styles with Step by Step Techniques by Lauren Rennells .  At the moment you can buy it from pinup parade or strangely I bought mine from jeepworld.com??!!

Stockings are so much more glamorous than tights and those with seams up the back are perfect for a vintage look.  You can get these from a selection at stockingshq.com or What Katie Did.  If you go with the latter I would say to invest in a 6 garter clip stocking belt at the same time.  The 4 clip ones that you can buy on the high street just don’t do the job and your seams end up squiffy.  A 'sixer' has six, adjustable metal garter clips which won't give your seams the chance to budge and you won’t be worrying about them all day/night.

As to makeup, there are so many wonderful colours for lipstick.  Boots No.7 do an especially lovely red at the moment.  Do remember a lip liner pencil in the same shade to make sure the bright colour on your lips doesn’t bleed and ensure you get a beautiful shape.  Pencils help you draw yourself a fuller shape as well but this takes practice.  Colour all comes down to what suits you but I prefer something a bit more matt than gloss as it seems to stay on better for kissing your GI ;-)  I have the typical red associated with the 1940s but also vibrant pinks and dark purples, anything with a bit of Hollywood glam.  If you really want to treat yourself have a look at MAC cosmetics and the Besame collection which is based on vintage colours and comes in delightful packaging (which I am always a sucker for).  My favourite Besame colours are ‘Champagne’ for a day look and ‘Wild Orchid’ for an evening.

Eyeliner – for a vixen starlet look I find a liquid liner gives the perfect flick.  It gives you the choice and ease to make the ends larger depending on how much of an impression you want to make.  False eyelashes are fab for a party.  If you’ve never used them before go for something as natural as possible or use ones just for the ends of your lash line.  A strip lash would be better to start off with than the tiny individual ones and tweezers make the job a lot easier.  For those of you who want a more dramatic effect the ‘Girls Aloud’ lashes are on sale right now (not the crazy ones with the diamonds on though!) I think the Kimberly ones are the nicest and create an amazing full effect but have a play.  At £5 a pack and such a transformation to boot I think it’s worth getting a day pair and evening pair.  When we went to Vintage at Goodwood I actually wore 2 pairs or lashes at once for a fuller effect.  I used a pair of full strip ones and a pair of the end ones that really give a lot of length to the ends.

Accessories could be one of our fascinators (of course) and a brooch.  Do have a look in charity shops as you never know what you might find.  Shara always amazes me with the things she finds.  Diamante would work well with this look, teamed with pearl earrings,  brooches that have an animal theme are very popular and you can always find something on ebay.
